Sweater Rebertsia is a seamless 1×1 ribbed sweater worked from the top down using a saddle-shoulder raglan construction. The project begins with a cast-on and neckline shaping using short rows. The back, front, and shoulder saddles are worked as one-piece: in back-and-forth (short) rows down to the bottom of the neckline, then in the round. On the back side, the saddle is widened from the neckline to the edge of the shoulder; on the front side, the natural shoulder slope is shaped using short rows. The back, front, saddle-shoulders, and sleeve caps are shaped with increases. Once the desired armhole depth is reached, the work is divided into the body and sleeves. The body is worked top-down in the round from the underarms to the bottom edge. Then the sleeves are worked top-down in the round from the underarms to the wrists. At the end, stitches are picked up along the neckline, and the turtleneck is worked from the bottom up. You can also choose to work a double crewneck instead of a turtleneck, if you prefer.
This design is tailored to the male body shape: the width and length of the back are greater than the width and length of the front due to working short rows and the specific construction of the saddle-shoulders. This pattern uses two types of increases: twisted yarn overs and twisted lifted increases from the horizontal strand between stitches. Short rows in 1×1 ribbing are worked using the wrapped stitch method. The edges have a professional, factory-like look. The bottom and sleeve edges are finished with a tubular bind-off.
The level of the pattern complexity is average. The required skills for working on this design:
– reading knitting charts (each chart is accompanied by a textual description; video tutorials demonstrate neckline shaping and saddle shoulder construction),
– working 1×1 ribbing evenly, without fluctuations in gauge, regardless of knitting direction or method (in back-and-forth rows, circular knitting, and magic loop),
– increasing and decreasing stitches with different leanings,
– “Wrap & Turn” short rows,
– tubular bind-off using a yarn needle.
All necessary practical skills are explained in detail in each size file and demonstrated in the video tutorials.
Gauge in 1×1 ribbing after wet blocking: 30 stitches × 36 rows/rounds in a 10 × 10 cm [4″ × 4″] square. The pattern is available in eight sizes and is suitable for men with a chest circumference of 85 to 125 cm [34″–50″].
